ANGLESEY MOTORCYCLE SHOW - MONA SHOWGROUND
21st - 23rd SEPTEMBER 2001

THE ROCKY ROAD CONTINUES…

In the land where men are men and sheep are frightened!)

By: Sammy Mack

Thursday.  As it was a local show, we decided to head off a day early and set up.  Arrived at tea time and we were greeted by Gary from Mag who showed us to our  area, which was perfect.  Right on the track.  Getting there a day earlier was an added advantage as it meant I could get used to the narrow track, which was making figure 8 burnouts a challenge.

Friday.  The daytime was still fairly quiet, as people were still arriving and setting up for the weekend ahead.  I kept busy by getting in practice and looking around the  many trade stands and fairground, as well as the huge bar area, which had to be checked out, of course.  A trip to the quad bike arena was a lot of fun with myself and the guys riding on two  wheels, instead of four, and me pulling tail light smashing wheelies.

Saturday.  The rest of the crew turned up and I was ready to rock and roll.  With the disco  gear set up and my large speakers sitting on the roof of the tranny van, the sound system was ready too.  However, Phil was not ready, as he was still on the A5 lost!  The show began with Shane followed by Jason Finn and I was getting worried as to Phil's whereabouts.  But as luck would have it, and only seconds to go before I was on, Phil  arrived and donned his leathers.  Good lad!  Having not been on the bike since Northern Ireland, and having a few beers the night before, he was thrown straight into it.  And you wonder why we call him Phil the Fearless!  The show went well, as did the following 2, including my latest scooter antics jumping bodies, and tossing another lid into the  unsuspecting crowd.  Sorry to the little boy who was on the receiving end.  The marshals did explain it was part of the act, oops!

The final show on the Saturday had a little added excitement as one of the flares attached to the bandit did not ignite so I lit another one, this time holding it in my hand.  I rode up track smiling with the flare burning away.  The smile gradually became a grimace as the flare was continually burning off layers of my skin between my finger  and thumb!  Don't try that one at home.  I carried on regardless, now with one hand of broken bones and the other with half the skin left on, and completed the show.

Once off track I noticed a blue flashing light approaching me as the paramedics had been called by a friend and  were at the scene in a flash.  All patched up and warned off the beer for fear of dehydration, I retired to my caravan to numb the pain with several cans of lager.  Who needs paracetamol!

It turned out I was not the only one who needed patching up that night as Jason Finn and Ben arrived at our caravan in need of the first aid kit due to Ben lacerating his arm on a barbed wire fence.  It just shows a stunt man's injuries don't always come from bike antics, some come from chasing sheep through fields late at night!  That night the crew and myself filled up on the many different Indian and Chinese delights that the catering vans offered on site.  Cheers guys and girls!

Unfortunately, Phil had to return to Birmingham due to work commitments, which left an opening for a new victim to appear in Sunday's show.  This new victim was to be Barry, or Baldrick as the commentator called him!  He had been with us all weekend at the show and had proved to be a good help, preparing the bikes and setting up camp.  But was he prepared for what lay ahead of him on Sunday?

Sunday.  Woke early with a huge balloon on my hand.  Yes, the burn had turned into the biggest blister imaginable; there was no way I could get my gloves on!  After a  hearty breakfast, and checking the bandit and scooter over, I gave Barry the rundown on the show.  After Shane and Jason Finn had appeared I was up next.  Even with my hand bandaged up, the show went well and so did Barry.  We performed wheelies, stoppies, donuts, tank surfing, skiing, figure 8 donuts and 3 up stunts with the kind help of Jason Finn's passenger, Ben.   Even a generator came into action as a ramp for the plank to jump over the brave victims on my 125 Aprillia  scooter.  My new publicity photographer, Dawn Tonkinson-Cattrell, captured all images on film.  Signed photographs and posters can be purchased by contacting her direct on  07754 190 246

Thanks for joining the team Dawn.

Overall, another top weekend was had by all and it was now time to head off home again.  Cheers M.A.G., we look forward to next year.
